A musical collective from Munich, Embryo was actualty formed in 1969 by percussionist Christian Burchard who had previously been member of Amon Duul II

In addition to Burchard, the band included Edgar Hofmann, Ralph Fisher, and John Kelly (ex-Ten Years After) along with occasional contributers - meaning the band rarely had a stable line-up. The band released a number of albums and then brought aboard sax player Charlie Mariano. This resulted in a style/structure change of the band - whose line was always in flux anyway.

Begining with 1976 the band began to add Indian, Middle Eastern, and Asian musical influences to their sound following a Burchard trip to India in 1976 and the release of Apo Calypso which included colaborartions with Indian musians.

As the middle 80's came around the band added African influences to their sound - working with Nigeria's Yoruba Dun Dun Ensemble. Over 20 years of music release the band in 1994 return more torwards their fusion, Krautrock roots with Ibn Battuta and continue to release music and can draw from a history of over 30 years of the Embryo concept and the more than 400 members who have participated in this project.
