V. A. – Gamelan of Central Java IV. Spiritual Music . CD
This fourth volume further explores the connection between music and mysticism in Central Java, where playing or listening to gamelan is also a spiritual discipline not just amusement. The first piece, a classical gendhing that is inspired by the love of God, includes the Kazan (call to prayer) woven into the music. Then, two ancient skate gendhing the only ones originally composed for a most important religious celebration in Java are presented in a studio performance. The two pieces completing the program, featuring a male chorus and an ancient instrument, the kemanak, are connected with the sacred musics pertaining to the raton (royal palace) of Surakarta. The Javanese texts are translated into English, with all their symbolic ambiguity. The booklet includes a note by Dr. Daniel Wolf.
